Genes and Chromosomes

You've probably heard of DNA – it's the famous double helix. Well, genes are specific sections of that DNA. Each gene carries the code, or "recipe," for a particular trait or function, like eye color, blood type, or how to make a specific protein.

Chromosomes are highly organized structures found inside the nucleus of almost every cell in your body. They're essentially tightly wound bundles of DNA. If you stretched out all the DNA from a single human cell, it would be about 2 meters long! Chromosomes keep this incredibly long strand of DNA compact and protected, making it manageable during cell division.
