How the IB is structured

What you sit, how long it takes, and how it is marked.

At a glance

Length
Two years, examined at the end, alongside internal assessment throughout.
Scoring
Six subjects scored 1–7 gives 42 points, plus up to 3 core points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, for a maximum of 45. The diploma is awarded at 24 points subject to conditions on failing grades and the core.
Worth knowing
Three subjects are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. HL subjects carry more content and more demanding papers, not just more hours.

External examinations

Papers 1, 2 and often 3, sat in the May or November session.

Internal assessment

A teacher-marked, externally moderated task in every subject — typically 20–30% of the subject grade.

The core

Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, the 4,000-word Extended Essay, and CAS.

Formats and requirements change between series. Confirm current details with International Baccalaureate before you plan around them.

Where IB candidates lose marks

The mistakes that are specific to this exam, not generic study advice.

Leaving the Extended Essay until the final year. It is 4,000 words of original research and rewards an early start more than any other component.

Underrating internal assessment, which is a fifth to a third of each subject grade and is the part you have most control over.

Writing TOK as philosophy rather than as analysis of knowledge claims with real-life situations.

Choosing HL subjects by interest alone without checking the content load against your university requirements.

How to revise for the IB

A sequence that suits this exam specifically.

  1. 1

    Command terms

The IB defines them precisely. "Evaluate" and "explain" earn marks in different ways and mixing them costs bands.

  2. 2

    Work from the subject guide

Each guide lists every assessable statement. That is the real revision checklist.

  3. 3

    Past papers by session

Papers differ between May and November sessions and between HL and SL — practise the ones you will sit.

  4. 4

    Protect the core

TOK and the EE are worth up to 3 points, which is often the difference between offers.
