How the IGCSE is structured

What you sit, how long it takes, and how it is marked.

At a glance

Length
Most subjects are examined across two or three papers.
Scoring
Cambridge IGCSE reports on 9–1 or A*–G depending on the subject and series; Edexcel International GCSE reports 9–1. Confirm which scale your subject uses with your centre.
Worth knowing
Many subjects are tiered — Core and Extended at Cambridge, Foundation and Higher at Edexcel. The tier caps the top grade available, so entry choice matters as much as revision.

Written papers

Structured questions, usually with a mix of short recall and extended response.

Practical or coursework

In sciences, either a practical exam or an alternative-to-practical paper testing method and analysis.

Formats and requirements change between series. Confirm current details with Cambridge International before you plan around them.

Where IGCSE candidates lose marks

The mistakes that are specific to this exam, not generic study advice.

Revising notes instead of doing past papers. IGCSE mark schemes reward specific phrasing that only past-paper practice teaches.

Not knowing which tier you are entered for, and so revising content that cannot appear on your paper — or missing content that can.

Skipping the alternative-to-practical paper in sciences, which has its own distinct skill set around apparatus and error.

Writing long answers for two-mark questions and short answers for six-mark ones. Mark allocation tells you the expected length.

How to revise for the IGCSE

A sequence that suits this exam specifically.

  1. 1

    Get the right syllabus code

Cambridge and Edexcel differ, and syllabi are revised on cycles. Everything else depends on this.

  2. 2

    Topic-by-topic with past questions

Revise a topic, then immediately do every past question on it. Mark against the scheme.

  3. 3

    Build a command-word glossary

State, describe, explain, evaluate and compare each demand a specific answer shape.

  4. 4

    Timed full papers

From two months out, under exam conditions, including the reading time.
