How the SAT is structured

What you sit, how long it takes, and how it is marked.

At a glance

Length
About 2 hours 14 minutes, taken on a computer.
Scoring
Total 400–1600, made up of Reading & Writing (200–800) and Math (200–800). There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank.
Worth knowing
Each section runs as two modules. How you perform on the first module decides the difficulty of the second, which is why steady accuracy early matters more than speed.

Reading & Writing

Short passages, one question each, covering craft and structure, information and ideas, standard English conventions, and expression of ideas.

Math

Algebra, advanced maths, problem solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. A graphing calculator is built into the test app and allowed throughout.

Formats and requirements change between series. Confirm current details with College Board before you plan around them.

Where SAT candidates lose marks

The mistakes that are specific to this exam, not generic study advice.

Rushing the first module. Because the test adapts, a weak first module caps the score band the second module can reach.

Ignoring the built-in Desmos calculator on questions where graphing is far faster than algebra.

Reading the whole passage before the question. Every Reading & Writing passage has exactly one question — read the question first.

Leaving blanks. There is no wrong-answer penalty, so an unanswered question is a guaranteed zero where a guess is not.

How to revise for the SAT

A sequence that suits this exam specifically.

  1. 1

    Diagnose

Sit one full timed practice test before revising anything. Without a baseline you will spend your time on topics you already know.

  2. 2

    Rebuild weak topics

Work topic by topic from the list above, not test by test. Full tests measure; topic work improves.

  3. 3

    Drill under time

Once accuracy is above 80% on a topic untimed, redo it timed. Speed is a separate skill from knowledge.

  4. 4

    Full tests, spaced

In the final six weeks, one full timed test a week, reviewing every wrong answer until you can explain why the right answer is right.
