How the CFA is structured

What you sit, how long it takes, and how it is marked.

At a glance

Length
Each level is a full-day computer-based exam in two sessions.
Scoring
Results are reported pass/fail against a minimum passing score set by the Board, with a topic-level breakdown. There is no published percentage pass mark.
Worth knowing
Three sequential levels, each of which must be passed before the next. Charterholder status also requires qualified work experience, not just the exams.

Level I

Multiple choice across the whole curriculum, testing knowledge and comprehension.

Level II

Item sets — a vignette followed by linked questions, testing application and analysis.

Level III

Constructed response essays plus item sets, focused on portfolio management and wealth planning.

Formats and requirements change between series. Confirm current details with CFA Institute before you plan around them.

Where CFA candidates lose marks

The mistakes that are specific to this exam, not generic study advice.

Under-weighting Ethics. It carries substantial weight at every level and is used in borderline decisions.

Reading the curriculum without practice questions. The exams test application, and Level II item sets punish passive reading hardest.

Starting too late. Candidates who pass typically report several hundred hours per level.

Skipping the Level III essay practice, which is a different skill from the item sets and where many strong candidates lose marks.

How to revise for the CFA

A sequence that suits this exam specifically.

  1. 1

    Ethics first and last

Cover it early, then again in the final fortnight, because it decides marginal results.

  2. 2

    Weight by topic weighting

CFA Institute publishes topic weights per level. Allocate study hours in proportion.

  3. 3

    Practice in exam format

Item sets for Level II and written answers for Level III, not just multiple choice.

  4. 4

    Mock exams under real timing

At least two full mocks in the final month, scored honestly.
