How the GCSE is structured

What you sit, how long it takes, and how it is marked.

At a glance

Length
Most subjects are examined across two or three papers in the summer series.
Scoring
Graded 9–1 in England, where 9 is the highest. A 4 is a standard pass and a 5 a strong pass. Wales and Northern Ireland use A*–G for many subjects.
Worth knowing
Maths and the sciences are tiered. Foundation tier is capped at grade 5, so tier entry sets your ceiling before you write anything.

Written papers

A mix of short recall, structured application and extended-response questions.

Non-exam assessment

Coursework or practical work in some subjects, such as spoken language in English and fieldwork in Geography.

Formats and requirements change between series. Confirm current details with AQA before you plan around them.

Where GCSE candidates lose marks

The mistakes that are specific to this exam, not generic study advice.

Re-reading notes and highlighting. Both feel productive and neither produces retrieval — self-testing does.

Not learning the required practicals in science, which are guaranteed to appear and are easy marks when rehearsed.

Losing marks on six-mark extended responses by listing points instead of building a linked explanation.

Doing past papers without marking them. The marking is where the learning happens.

How to revise for the GCSE

A sequence that suits this exam specifically.

  1. 1

    Start with the weakest subject

Not the most enjoyable one. Grade gains are largest where you are furthest from the boundary.

  2. 2

Flashcards for recall, papers for application

They are different skills and both are examined.

  3. 3

    Required practicals

Learn method, variables, and the expected result for each one in the specification.

  4. 4

    Spaced repetition

Revisit each topic after a day, a week, then a month rather than cramming it once.
