How the IELTS is structured

What you sit, how long it takes, and how it is marked.

At a glance

Length
Listening, Reading and Writing are taken together in under three hours; Speaking is a separate interview.
Scoring
Band 0–9 for each skill in half-band steps, plus an overall band that is the average of the four rounded to the nearest half. Institutions usually set both an overall band and a minimum per skill.
Worth knowing
Academic and General Training differ in the Reading and Writing papers. Listening and Speaking are the same for both. Choosing the wrong version is a costly mistake.

Listening

Four recorded parts moving from everyday to academic contexts, heard once only.

Reading

Three long passages — academic texts for Academic, workplace and general texts for General Training.

Writing

Task 1 (describe a visual, or write a letter for General Training) and Task 2, an essay carrying twice the weight.

Speaking

A three-part face-to-face interview including a long turn from a task card.

Formats and requirements change between series. Confirm current details with IELTS before you plan around them.

Where IELTS candidates lose marks

The mistakes that are specific to this exam, not generic study advice.

Preparing for the wrong version. Academic and General Training Reading and Writing are genuinely different exams.

Writing under the word minimum in Writing, which is penalised directly regardless of quality.

Memorising phrases for Speaking. Examiners are trained to spot rehearsed language and it lowers the lexical resource band.

Not transferring Listening answers carefully — spelling and grammatical form are both marked.

How to revise for the IELTS

A sequence that suits this exam specifically.

  1. 1

Find the band you actually need

Requirements differ by country and institution, and the per-skill minimum often binds before the overall.

  2. 2

    Practise Listening once only

Replaying the audio during practice trains a skill the test does not allow.

  3. 3

    Get writing marked

Band descriptors are public but self-marking writing is unreliable. Feedback is the fastest route up.

  4. 4

    Speak aloud daily

Even alone. Fluency is a motor skill and does not improve from reading about it.
