Biology is a vast field, but it always comes back to understanding life. What is life, anyway? Living things share several characteristics: they're organized, they can grow and develop, they reproduce, they respond to their environment, they maintain internal stability (homeostasis), and they use energy.

Eukaryotic cells are incredibly complex, and a big part of that complexity comes from their internal organization and how they interact with their environment. The cell membrane and the nucleus are two of the most fundamental structures in achieving this.

Your cytoplasm includes everything within the cell membrane that isn't the nucleus. It's made up of two main parts: the cytosol and the organelles.

The cytosol is the jelly-like, semi-fluid substance that fills the cell. It's mostly water, but also contains dissolved ions, proteins, and small molecules. Many crucial metabolic reactions happen here, like the first steps of breaking down sugar for energy (glycolysis).

Eukaryotic cells are complex, and part of that complexity comes from their specialized organelles. Two major players in energy conversion are mitochondria and chloroplasts, and the cytoskeleton is crucial for structure and movement.
