Introduction to Bonding Models

Free model
  • Steps:
    1. Count total valence electrons for all atoms.
    2. Arrange atoms, usually with the least electronegative atom in the center (never H).
    3. Form single bonds (two electrons) between central and outer atoms.
    4. Distribute remaining electrons as lone pairs to outer atoms to satisfy octets.
    5. Place any leftover electrons on the central atom.
    6. If the central atom doesn't have an octet, form double or triple bonds by moving lone pairs from outer atoms.

Molecular Geometry and Lewis Structures

Free model

Understanding molecular geometry starts with drawing correct Lewis structures. A Lewis structure shows all valence electrons as dots (lone pairs) or lines (bonds) around the atoms. Once you have the Lewis structure, you can determine the 3D arrangement using the Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory.
