Introduction to Communication

Free model
  • Sender: The person who initiates the message. They decide what to communicate and how.
  • Message: The actual information, idea, or feeling being sent. This can be verbal (words), nonverbal (body language, tone), or written.
  • Encoding: The process the sender uses to translate their thoughts into a message. For example, choosing specific words or gestures.
  • Channel: The medium through which the message is sent. This could be face-to-face conversation, a phone call, email, text message, or a presentation.
  • Receiver: The person or group who gets the message.
  • Decoding: The process the receiver uses to interpret and understand the message. They try to make sense of the sender's encoded message.
  • Feedback: The receiver's response to the sender's message. This lets the sender know if the message was received and understood. Feedback can be verbal (a reply) or nonverbal (a nod, a confused look).
  • Noise: Anything that interferes with the message getting from the sender to the receiver clearly. This can be physical (loud sounds), psychological (prejudices, stress), semantic (different interpretations of words), or even technical (a bad phone connection).
