Muscle Histology and Microstructure

Muscles are fascinating tissues responsible for all body movements. We categorize them into three main types based on their structure, location, and control: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth. Each has distinct histological features that you'll observe under the microscope.

Axial Skeleton Muscles (Back, Thorax, and Abdomen)

  • Superficial Back Muscles: These primarily control movements of the upper limbs.
    • Trapezius: A large, triangular muscle covering the upper back and neck. It shrugs shoulders, rotates the scapula, and extends the neck.
    • Latissimus Dorsi: A broad, flat muscle of the lower back. It extends, adducts, and internally rotates the arm (think swimming or pulling yourself up).
    • Rhomboids (Major & Minor): Lie deep to the trapezius, between the scapulae. They retract and stabilize the scapula.
    • Levator Scapulae: Elevates and rotates the scapula.
