Questions students ask
How do you calculate a gear ratio?
Divide the number of teeth on the driven gear by the number on the driver. A 12-tooth gear driving a 36-tooth gear gives 3 : 1: a third of the speed and three times the torque.
What does an idler gear do?
It makes the driven gear turn the same way as the driver without changing the gear ratio.
