The simplest type of organic compounds are hydrocarbons. As the name suggests, they're made up only of hydrogen (H) and carbon (C) atoms. They are the backbone from which many other organic compounds are derived.

Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons, meaning they only contain carbon-carbon single bonds and carbon-hydrogen single bonds. The general formula for an acyclic (non-cyclic) alkane is CnH2n+2, where 'n' is the number of carbon atoms.

Alcohols are classified based on the number of alkyl groups (carbon-containing branches) attached to the carbon atom bearing the hydroxyl group.
