The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, isn't just a historical document; it's a foundational text for American government and ideals. It's carefully constructed to make a powerful case for independence. You can break it down into five main parts, each serving a specific purpose in its argument.

Before the US Constitution, the Articles of Confederation government faced a huge challenge: what to do with the vast lands west of the Appalachian Mountains, north of the Ohio River, and east of the Mississippi? This area was called the Northwest Territory. The states had given up their individual claims to this land, making it federal property.

The solution came in a series of laws, culminating in the most important: the Northwest Ordinance of 1787.
