Every sentence needs at least one independent clause. An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence.

A dependent clause (or subordinate clause) also contains a subject and a verb, but it doesn't express a complete thought and can't stand alone. It relies on an independent clause to make sense. Dependent clauses often start with words like because, although, while, if, when, since, that, who, which.
