How the WAEC is structured

What you sit, how long it takes, and how it is marked.

At a glance

Length
Each subject is examined in two or three papers: an objective (multiple-choice) paper, a theory or essay paper, and in the sciences a practical or alternative-to-practical paper.
Scoring
Graded A1 (best) to F9. A1 to C6 are credits, D7 and E8 are passes, and F9 is a fail. University admission in Nigeria usually asks for credits in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics. Confirm current requirements with WAEC and the institution.
Worth knowing
School candidates usually sit in May/June and private candidates in November/December. The WASSCE is also taken in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia.

Objective paper

Multiple choice across the whole syllabus.

Theory / essay paper

Structured and extended answers where method, working and presentation earn the marks.

Practical

In Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural Science: handling specimens, apparatus and results.

Formats and requirements change between series. Confirm current details with WAEC Nigeria before you plan around them.

Where WAEC candidates lose marks

The mistakes that are specific to this exam, not generic study advice.

Not showing working in Mathematics and science theory papers. A right answer with no method can lose most of the marks.

Ignoring the format of letters and articles in English, where layout carries marks before content does.

Revising only for the objective paper, then running out of things to write in the theory paper.

Leaving practicals to the last week. Specimen and apparatus questions reward practice, not memory.

How to revise for the WAEC

A sequence that suits this exam specifically.

  1. 1

    Secure English and Mathematics first

They decide whether the certificate counts for admission at all.

  2. 2

    Pair notes with past questions

Revise a topic, then answer past objective and theory questions on it.

  3. 3

    Write full theory answers

Practise the layout and working the marking scheme rewards, not just the final answer.

  4. 4

Timed papers in the final month

One subject per sitting, under exam conditions.
